Aerosmith Insist Steven Tyler’s American Idol Spot Won’t Delay New Album

When rumours of Steven Tyler’s impending decision to join hit TV show American Idol first began to surface, it seemed his move on to the judging panel could increase problems for Aerosmith during what has already been a fractious time for the band. However, guitarist Brad Whitford has attempted to ease fans’ fears today, and said Tyler’s American Idol gig could aid the group during the recording of their new album.

In an interview with the Boston Herald newspaper, Whitford claimed the flexibility of their schedules should mean that Tyler’s filming will not interfere with their recording sessions. “We might actually get more work done because we haven’t always been so disciplined when it comes to schedules,” he said.

“When Steven’s filming, it’ll only be two days a week, so it’s our intention to do some new recording on his days off.” When asked if Tyler is ‘on board with that plan,’ Whitford simply replied: “Yeah, he’s excited.”

Whitford’s comments should diffuse any lingering rumours of tension surrounding the band, after fellow member Joe Perry criticised Tyler’s plans back in August, saying: “After working with me for 40 years, he couldn’t tell me about this? Why so secretive? We’re told it’s a done deal. If Steven is committed to a TV show, that kind of thing affects the rest of us.”

The new series of American Idol will be launched in January.
