Razorlight Aim For Return To Their Roots On New Album

Razorlight frontman Johnny Borrell has revealed he is looking to take the band back to the sound of their debut album ‘Up All Night‘ as they record the follow up to their disappointing third album ‘Slipway Fires‘.

After the departure of drummer Andy Burrows and the critical panning of their third record, Razorlight have endured a tough couple of years, but Borrell has insisted a return to the spirit of their first LP is leading to much stronger new material. “I’ve been in a rehearsal room and I’ve been writing and we’ve been going out playing a few little unannounced gigs,” he told XFM’s Evening show. “I’m trying to keep under the radar a little while I’m making the record but as far as I’m concerned I’m very excited about it.

The last album was a breakup album and I’m not breaking up with anybody at the moment, thank God, so this is another party album. To me it is going back more to the spirit and the energy of ‘Up All Night‘/’Somewhere Else‘ kind of Razorlight, which is my favourite period of Razorlight and I’m excited about it – it’s an energetic rock and roll album.”

Borrell added that his desire to not take himself too seriously is also fuelling a return to the sound of their early days. “Big bands get too serious about things. You get very self important and rock and roll is not worth taking too seriously,” he continued. “It’s gonna be my fourth album but I want it to be like a debut album because I think that’s where it is at.”

Razorlight headlined the Oxjam launch in East London last night (29/9).
