Mumford & Sons Fear Over Exposure In The UK

Folk-rockers Mumford & Sons have said they are hoping to keep their forthcoming tour as low key as possible as they look to avoid being over-exposed in the UK whilst also concentrating on taking their music out to Europe and the US.

The band have made several appearance at UK festivals this summer, but now the rest of their year only involves plans for a short UK tour this October. “I think we’d rather under-estimate than over-estimate who we can play to,” Marcus Mumford told XFM.

“We don’t want to milk it and we don’t want to over-play. In a way we want to play as many gigs as we can but we’ve got to spread ourselves across different places now – which is amazing – that in itself is very exciting for us as a band. And we wanted to fit in a tour of America and of Europe as well in the Autumn after the festivals and before Christmas so we had to keep things shorter.”

Later, Marcus also discussed the joy the group continue to feel when they are offered the opportunity of sharing the stage with their heroes. “We used to go crazy if we were offered a gig in London, like we’d be bang up for it and we’d go and we’d do it and we’d have a great time,” he said.

“This summer with the festivals we played we’d hear about the line-up and we’d go ‘wow – we get to be on the same stage as The Strokes or Bob Dylan!’ and that’s huge for us and we keep getting surprised.”

Mumford & Sons’ debut ‘Sigh No More‘ was nominated for this year’s Mercury Music Prize, but missed out at last night’s ceremony to London trio The xx.
