Interview: Chew Lips

Hot on the heels of their successful US debut at this year’s SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas, two weeks ago, London-based electro-pop trio CHEW LiPS are excited to announce they will be performing at Littlefield in Brooklyn, NY, on Monday, April 12.

The group formed in London in 2008 and are made up of Tigs (vocals), James Watkins (bass, synths) and Will Sanderson (guitar, synths). They were prolific from the get-go, and by the time the guitars had been unplugged after their second rehearsal, they had 20 songs added to their catalogue. After being out on the road with those songs for over a year, they released their debut album ‘Unicorn’ in January, to widespread critical acclaim. The record immediately displayed a unique sound which blends all the best bits of electronic and pop music – a sound which the group themselves described to us as ‘darker, weirder, alternative pop’.

We sat down with the band to discuss all the issues surrounding being an upcoming band in 2010, including being championed by Steve Lamacq, their thoughts on the decision to scrap 6Music, the importance of remixes and the pros and cons of their musical influences.

At their first ever show in the New York City area, the band will be showcasing their powerful and vivacious live show while performing tracks off their highly-acclaimed debut album “Unicorn,” an album that was recently released in the UK on January 25.

“Unicorn” was produced by Dave Kosten (Bat for Lashes), and is an album that presents itself as a gloriously off-kilter take on pop with a number of wayward electronic elements. Made up of ten tracks of impeccably-executed future-pop that veers from grinding electro-pop grooves to fevered howls of beat-heavy R&B, “Unicorn” is a record fit to herald a new decade.
