The Joy Formidable (pic) are a three-piece formed in Wales in 2007. Currently unsigned, the band have released six acclaimed singles, the most recent of which is the excellent ‘Popinjay’. An as-yet-untitled debut album is set for release this year, and the band are currently on a UK tour throughout March. The Beat (pic) formed in Birmingham in 1978 and released their superb debut album ‘I Just Can’t Stop It’ in May 1980, which peaked at #3 in the UK charts and put them at the forefront of the Ska/2 Tone scene. Two more records followed before they split in 1983. They reformed in 2006 without former members Andy Cox and David Steele. They will continue their tour of the UK into April and May. Manchester’s The Answering Machine (pic) play a homecoming gig at the city’s intimate Jabez Clegg venue this week. They released their debut record ‘Another City, Another Sorry’ in June last year, which was called a ‘fantastic debut’ by NME.
