Our highlights this week include a new album from one of the world’s biggest rock acts, a huge homecoming show for Elbow and the return of a long-running TV series.

Albums

No doubting the big release this week as Muse’s hugely-anticipated fifth studio album ‘The Resistance’ is out today. Elsewhere, David Gray releases his first album in four years – ‘Draw The Line‘ is out this week and The Big Pink’s debut album ‘A Brief History Of Love’, out today, is definitely worth checking out.

Singles

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke releases a solo double A-sided single, ‘All For The Best/Ciao My Shining Star‘ and Placebo issue ‘Never Ending Why’, the second single from their new album ‘Battle For The Sun‘.

Gigs

The White Air Sports & Music Event, which features bands such as The Cribs, Doves and Biffy Clyro begins on Friday at Brighton Beach. Elbow have a huge homecoming gig at Manchester’s MEN Arena, also on Friday and Peter Doherty has a couple of solo shows at the Roundhouse, London (Saturday) and Leamington Spa’s Assembly (Sunday).

Television

Later…With Jools Holland returns to BBC2 on Tuesday (10pm) with a live half hour show featuring Muse and Florence & The Machine amongst others. An extended version is aired on Friday at 11.35pm. Immediately following the Friday airing is coverage from Muse’s recent homecoming gigs in Teignmouth, Devon. Florence & The Machine also features on a MTV Sessions broadcast on Friday at 9pm.

Radio

BBC 6 Music air ‘Seven More Days that Rocked the World, The End of Pirate Radio’, a documentary charting the downfall of Pirate Radio in 1967, presented by Stuart Machonie (Midnight, Tues). The same station airs an early 1998 gig from Doves at Manchester’s Hop & Grape Venue (Wednesday, 9pm). London-based newcomers Mumford & Sons join Geoff Lloyd on Absolute Radio from 7pm on Tuesday.
