London trio White Lies have announced the title of their forthcoming second studio album, and have also released details of the record’s tracklist.
London trio White Lies will return with their as-yet-untitled second album on January 17th.
Following Kasabian’s headline shows at last weekend’s V Festival, their final scheduled dates, frontman Tom Meighan told the UK’s News Of The World newspaper he is looking into new solo projects to keep him busy during the band’s down-time.
When Violens (vy-lenz’) began plotting their winter tour, they decided to create something to share with the audience overseas while working on their debut album. The New York band has explored a myriad of sounds and styles this past year on their self-titled EP (Cantora), a 7” for the track “Lighting Lightning” (Chess Club, UK only), and a slew of remix collaborations with the likes of MGMT, The Very Best, Lansing-Dreiden, White Lies and many more.
As the sun rose on the first day of the 2009 Leeds Festival, expectations were high on site with an impressive afternoon/evening Main Stage line-up. However, by the end of the night, it was hard to shake off an over-riding feeling of disappointment.
Manchester band The Courteeners took to the stage in the late afternoon to a very respectable crowd on the Main Stage. The band have forged a devoted following in the north of England and everything looked to be in place for a strong set. “This festival starts now!” declared the ever modest frontman Liam Fray, but the crowd weren’t ready to follow his lead. Ultimately the performance fell flat, songs from 2008 debut ‘St. Jude‘ now seem overly familiar, and the band and fans seem to have grown tired of the songs which were delivered with real power and passion 18 months ago. Any casual fans or critics were unlikely to be bowled over by what was a 5/10 performance at best.

White Lies frontman Harry McVeigh has attacked plans for late singer Michael Jackson’s planned fifty date UK tour as ‘exploitation’. Speaking to Gigwise, McVeigh said the gigs would have been “hard work for anyone”. The band’s bass player, Charles Cave, also criticised the tour, saying: “He definitely wouldn’t have made it through the fifty shows. I think maybe he would have done four or five, if he was lucky.” He then described Jackson’s death as a “very sad day”.
Pressure on Jackson to prepare for the fifty dates at London’s O2 Arena, which would have been his first UK dates for over ten years and were due to begin this July, have been cited by some friends of Jackson as one of the reasons for his reported declining health before he collapsed on Thursday.
White Lies were speaking to Gigwise at the Glastonbury festival, where they played the Other Stage yesterday. Commenting on their performance, Cave said: “It’s good now we’ve been told we played well, but we didn’t know how it was going to be received.” White Lies’ set included a cover of tonight’s headliner Bruce Springsteen’s classic ‘Dancing In The Dark‘.
