A wise old head among the many youthful acts which dominate this year’s shortlist, Paul Weller was initially seen as nothing more that an outsider for this year’s Mercury Music Prize. Things have been steadily changing over recent weeks however, and now bookies have dramatically cut the odds on Weller taking home the award after what they call an “unprecedented” rush of bets backing the former Jam legend to win.

The xx stays on top of this week’s UK Indie Album chart, exactly a year after first entering the charts. Elsewhere, Vampire Weekend’s second record ‘Contra‘ climbs to two and Prodigy’s ‘Invaders Must Die‘ re-enters the top ten. Outside the top ten, Mercury-nominated Villagers have moved up two places and are this week’s no.21.
US rapper Eminem returns to the top of the UK Album chart this week, swapping places with last week’s number one ‘The Suburbs‘. Paolo Nutini’s second record ‘Sunny Side Up‘ continues to hold strong in the top ten, and The xx’s debut album is at #10 following a boost in sales in recent weeks since their Mercury Music Prize nomination.
Indie band Wild Beasts have been giving their predictions for this year’s Mercury Music Prize, and have named Leeds-based singer Corinne Bailey Rae as their tip for the annual prize.
The xx is on top of this week’s UK Indie Album chart for another week, while The Black Crowes’ acoustic collection ‘Croweology‘ enters the chart at #8. In the Indie Singles chart, Example remains on top with his track ‘Kickstarts‘ and Ash’s latest single release ‘Carnal Love‘ lands at no.5.
