The Maccabees have admitted the charts would benefit from an influx of alternative music after paying close attention to the mainstream world for the first time following the successes of their album ‘Given To The Wild‘ and single ‘Pelican‘.
“It would be beneficial if there was more alternative music in the mainstream charts,” frontman Orlando Weeks told ShortList . “This is the first time we’ve been involved at that end of the charts, so it’s the only time I’ve ever listened to what else was in them.
“It became obvious that we weren’t the norm. There’s so much great alternative music being made, and it brings the best out of pop music, and vice versa, when it’s at the top end of the charts.”
With the release of ‘Given To The Wild’ in January, The Maccabees managed to buck the trend of many of their guitar-led counterparts by enjoying the strongest first week sales figures of their career. In the process, the record peaked at #4 on the UK Album Chart.
The Maccabees‘ exciting start to 2012 has continued today with the news they will play their largest UK headline show to date next June.
The Maccabees have shrugged off the much-discussed commercial struggles of many guitar bands at the moment, insisting rock music will never go out of fashion.
The Maccabees have missed out on a first UK number one album, while Noel Gallagher‘s debut solo record has climbed back into the top ten.
In The Guardian’s review of The Maccabees‘ third LP ‘Given to the Wild‘, Alex Petridis entertained a peculiar notion; that despite the simmering success that The Maccabees have had over the past five years, they remain somewhat anonymous and faceless amongst their more outspoken peers in the modern indie landscape.
The Maccabees have revealed they were immediately convinced their second album ‘Wall Of Arms‘ could be bettered once worked had been finished on that record back in 2009.
The Maccabees are on course to top the UK Album Chart this Sunday according to midweek figures released today.
The Maccabees have released more UK tour dates for next year to go with their previously announced January 2012 shows.
The Maccabees are to headline a special London gig early next year to mark MTV‘s annual Brand New For 2012 Award.
