Nearly three years ago, indie Brit-rockers Pint Shot Riot played two sold-out shows at the Kasbah in their native city of Coventry. Over a thousand fans turned out for each concert, many of them teenagers, and all in attendance were rabid and ready to witness their hometown heroes seize a moment of that magnitude. Their performance was impeccable, the kids went crazy, and the whole scene was detailed and documented in the music video for their 2008 single ‘Holes’.
Today’s Soundbites looks at the last UK gig for Supergrass, which Arctic Monkey joined P.Diddy on stage, Pete Doherty’s latest antics, and a return to action for The Strokes and The Vaselines.
Browsing the BBC news website last Monday morning one particular headline caught my eye – ‘Supergrass split‘. What? I didn’t actually want to believe it was true, surely it couldn’t be? I even double checked the calendar to make sure it wasn’t April fools day, despite knowing full well that it had already been and gone. I think ‘denial’ is probably the word I’m looking for here. Once I’d read the article in full, it started to sink in. This was not some sort of practical joke, it was not some unforgivable grave mistake by the BBC’s editorial team, Supergrass – a band I’ve held so dearly in my heart since the mid nineties, have actually packed it in, and there’s no amount of reality dodging that could change this terrible news.
Britpop band Supergrass have announced that they are to call it a day following a June tour, citing a ’17 year itch’ as the reason.
Two members of 90s Britpop heroes Supergrass have completed work on a new covers album, under the name The Hot Rats. Singer Gaz Coombes, along with drummer Danny Goffey recorded the album with with Radiohead cohort Nigel Godrich.
Speaking about the album to BBC 6 Music, which will feature songs from artists such as The Kinks and The Doors, Godrich said: “I saw them doing a cover of ‘Beat It‘ when they were promoting their last record as a two piece, so we decided to record it. Then we got in the studio and realised there were some better songs that we could be doing.”
