Rock legends The Who wrapped up the week-long Teenage Cancer Trust gigs last night (30th), performing their classic 1973 rock opera ‘Quadrophenia‘ in it’s entirety.
Pearl Jam announced today that they will play eleven (11) Midwest and East Coast tour dates in May of 2010. The tour kicks-off on May 3rd at Sprint Center in Kansas City and wraps on May 21st at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Pearl Jam’s U.S. tour follows the band’s previously announced headlining appearance at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation Festival on May 1st.
Pearl Jam have announce their first seven, of eleven total scheduled, headlining and festival appearances in Europe for the Summer of 2010. The US rock vetrans will be kicking off the tour on June 22 in Dublin.
Further scheduled stops are Belfast, Ireland; London; Berlin; Arras, France; Werchter, Belgium; and Oeiras, Portugal. The support acts for the tour have not been announced yet.
Along with Nirvana, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam was at the forefront of the grunge explosion that emerged from Seattle in the early 1990s and helped to redefine the parameters of rock and roll. Unlike their contemporaries, however, Pearl Jam is the only band of the four to have remained an active unit, consistently touring and releasing albums, in the nearly two decades that have passed since the heyday of grunge. Over this time the band has managed to maintain a rabid and loyal fan-base which follows them around on tour and has earned them, justifiably or not, comparisons with the Grateful Dead.
Our highlights this week include a new album from one of the biggest US acts around, the beginning of a UK tour by one of the best live bands in the country, and a documentary on one of the greatest records of the seventies.

US heavyweights Pearl Jam release their ninth studio album ‘Backspacer‘ this week, which has already received widespread praise from music critics. Former Longpigs and Pulp guitarist Richard Hawley releases ‘Truelove’s Gutter‘. Hawley is enjoying a successful period in his career; after his 2005 record ‘Coles Corner’ was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize, he was nominated in the Best Male category at the 2008 Brit Awards. He will now be hoping for further success with his new album, which one critic has described as “quietly passionate, graceful, elegant, utterly moving, and unequivocally beautiful in its honesty and sophistication.”
Today MySpace Music is exclusively premiering Pearl Jam’s long awaited 9th studio album, Backspacer, days before it hits stores. To stream the album in its entirety for free visit the band’s official MySpace profile at http://www.myspace.com/tenclub.
While you’re there, be sure to check out the “Backspacer Short” mini-documentary about the making of Backspacer which beautifully captures the energy behind the creation of this album and features live performance cuts as well as the band’s current hit single “The Fixer,” which MySpace Music premiered back in July.
Pearl Jam is Eddie Vedder, Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard, Mike McCready and Matt Cameron. Since coming together in the early 90’s Pearl Jam has sold more than 60 million records around the globe making them one of the most successful alternative rock bands around. Backspacer, helmed by long-time Pearl Jam producer Brendan O’ Brien, will be released in stores September 20th.
