It is always hard to believe that the Internet is less than 20 years in the popular domain. Throughout its short life it has been continually adopting a new and unpredictable guise and no one really needs to be told how it has revolutionized the music industry. Judging by the incalculability of this paradigm-shifting phenomenon, it would take an ignorant, and perhaps arrogant, point of view to predict where it will be going next.
But who better than Prince to rain on our parade and go so far as to declare it “dead”? The infamously aloof artist claimed that “the Internet’s completely over” and sees no point in handing over his precious compositions to the likes of iTunes, or any music-download site for that matter. The artist formerly known as a symbol analogized the downfall of the world-wide-web with MTV: “At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated. Anyway, all these computers and digital gadgets are no good. They just fill your head with numbers and that can’t be good for you.”
The Australian independent labels association AIR responded in anger yesterday as US media giants Myspace launched their Music services prior to having finalised a license with Australia’s leading independent labels and artists.
The AIR claim that “Myspace’s disregard for the value of independent music has been exposed…..” as several of Australia’s best known artists such as Nick Cave, The Temper and Sia are currently not featured on Myspace Music.
When Myspace Music launched in the US last year a vast majority of the world’s indie labels, represented by Merlin, were not on board and signed up.
Little Glitches and Chapter 24
Welcome to what is the start of a new series we like to call Live4ever Presents… Each week we will introduce you to two new up and coming bands that we feel are definitely worth mentioning to the masses. So without further ado let me commence with my first latest find for you. These four guys from Sheffield go by the name of ‘Little Glitches’.
This band were a very lucky find for me, they have a sound that I thoroughly enjoy in bands of late. They stem from a classic background of psychedelic, folky sounds such as Buffalo Springfield, Incredible String Band and now quite close to Fleet Foxes. When I first heard their last EP ’123′ I was amazed by how wonderful and jubilant there music was. Its a dreamy slice of harmonic psychedelic folk music that makes you feel like your walking through a field and discovering something that is a secret to the world. I don’t usually get this with a lot of new music, but with these guys I genuinely got the ‘spine tingling’ feeling when I first heard them, a definite sign of something special in my eyes.
