There is more than a passing resemblance to Morrissey in the expressively pained vocals of Little Vegas Lies’ frontman Simon Moore. One wonders if the Dewsbury five-piece are fans of The Smiths and their brand of contemplative, heartfelt melancholia, though the comparison is not unfavourable; the first release from their debut EP ‘A Truth Not Far Away’, ‘My Ghost Town‘, strikes just the right balance between melody and rock, without sounding tame. The single, released next month (July 4), features very little production, with Moore’s words and a twinkling guitar carrying the song, rhythmic clangs of cymbals in the background creating a sound somewhat akin to Scottish outfit The Twilight Sad.
Cloud Control have built up an impressive momentum since they descended on Britain’s shores from their native Australia earlier this year. Their previous single ‘Gold Canary‘ earned them a much coveted place on Steve Lamacq’s Rebel Playlist and they’ve been vaunted by none other than Radio 1’s Peel-lite arbiter of cool, Nick Grimshaw. ‘This Is What I Said‘ is the latest single from their forthcoming debut album ‘Bliss Release‘.
Glastonbury have released full details of the 2011 line-up, with Morrissey, Paul Simon and Fleet Foxes among those joining previously announced headliners U2, Coldplay and Beyonce.
Carl Barat, best known as one half of the songwriting partnership responsible for the most influential band of the last decade, is not one to rest on his laurels. Last summer he finally succumbed to Pete Doherty‘s persuasive charms and reunited The Libertines to headline the Reading and Leeds festival. The gigs, which also included a warm up show at London’s Kentish Town Forum, did no harm to the band’s legacy and went down an absolute storm.
It might be easy to call it bias to say the best spot to be for most of Thursday at SXSW was at Live4ever’s ‘Two Fingered Salute’ hosted at Antone’s, but by the end of a series of exhilarating gigs, bias just didn’t come into the equation.
