As thousands of festival-goers settle in for the start of Glastonbury’s 40th anniversary tomorrow, a clutch of this year’s performers have been speaking of their plans, with special guests promised for two of the acts.

Lou Reed Releases Remastered ‘Metal Machine Music’

Lou Reed has finalised details of the digitally re-mastered edition of his seminal 1975 album “Metal Machine Music.”  Reed will release the ground breaking album in the UK on April 19th on his independent label “Sister Ray” in the following three formats – double gatefold vinyl in quadraphonic sound, audio DVD and Blu-ray.

The album coincides with Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Trio UK concerts at the Cambridge Junction (April 17), Oxford O2 Academy (April 18) and London Royal Festival Hall (April 19, part of the Ether Festival).

Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Trio Announce European Tour Dates

Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Trio will embark on a UK and European tour on April 17th, when they perform what is described as “A Night of Deep Noise.”

Featuring Lou Reed (processed & unprocessed guitars & mini continuum), Ulrich Krieger (tenor sax & live-electronics), and Sarth Calhoun (live processing & continuum fingerboard), the Metal Machine Trio concerts, although influenced and inspired by Reed’s seminal 1975 album ‘Metal Machine Music, won’t duplicate the original album, but will instead opt for entirely new unique music, noise and soundscapes.

The Week Ahead In UK Music: Releases, Gigs & Broadcasts

Our highlights this week include a new album from one of the biggest US acts around, the beginning of a UK tour by one of the best live bands in the country, and a documentary on one of the greatest records of the seventies.

US heavyweights Pearl Jam release their ninth studio album ‘Backspacer‘ this week, which has already received widespread praise from music critics. Former Longpigs and Pulp guitarist Richard Hawley releases ‘Truelove’s Gutter‘. Hawley is enjoying a successful period in his career; after his 2005 record ‘Coles Corner’ was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize, he was nominated in the Best Male category at the 2008 Brit Awards. He will now be hoping for further success with his new album, which one critic has described as “quietly passionate, graceful, elegant, utterly moving, and unequivocally beautiful in its honesty and sophistication.”

Supergrass Duo Return As ‘The Hot Rats’

Two members of 90s Britpop heroes Supergrass have completed work on a new covers album, under the name The Hot Rats. Singer Gaz Coombes, along with drummer Danny Goffey recorded the album with with Radiohead cohort Nigel Godrich.

Speaking about the album to BBC 6 Music, which will feature songs from artists such as The Kinks and The Doors, Godrich said: “I saw them doing a cover of ‘Beat It‘ when they were promoting their last record as a two piece, so we decided to record it. Then we got in the studio and realised there were some better songs that we could be doing.”
