Ian Brown: Liam and Noel Gallagher Should Launch Solo Careers

Posted on 13 Sep 2009 at 1:48pm

Former Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown has urged Liam and Noel Gallagher to pursue solo projects after Noel walked out on Oasis last month.

Rumours are rife that Liam is ready to continue working on Oasis projects without his brother, while Noel is widely expected to release a long-awaited debut solo album some time in the future.

Brown told the Press Association: “What’s a shame is that they’re brothers. From being ten and six scrapping on the carpet in the front room, now they are doing it in public and worldwide – I think that’s a bit of a shame for them. Life’s hard enough without scrapping with your brother when you’re a grown man. I would say go solo. I can heartily recommend it. It’s a fine way to be.”

Brown also commented on the praise the Gallaghers heaped upon his former band The Stone Roses when they first burst onto the music scene in 1994: “I always loved Oasis because when they came out, they did express that they loved us and they saw that we did it and they thought they could do it too. We’re lads like they are, and that inspired them. That means a lot to me.”

Ian Brown: “Reunions Are Only About The Money”

Posted on 28 Aug 2009 at 10:25am

Ian Brown has set his price for a Stone Roses reunion and it seems like a good deal , then again it’s quite doubtful it would ever happen at second glance.

Ian said that he would reform The Stone Roses only if he was reduced to “begging on the streets”.

Brown is scheduled to play on the Main Stage at this weekend’s Reading And Leeds Festivals explains he’s disheartened by bands who reunite simply to cash in on their former glories.

“Maybe if you see me begging on the streets you might find me doing The Stone Roses the next day,” he said. “We did it because we wanted to change the world, we didn’t do it because we wanted to be millionaires.”

Speaking to the NME Brown admitted that there were a couple of exceptions to the reunion rule.

“I was glad when the Sex Pistols got back because they never really got paid,” he explained. He added that he was also pleased The Specials together again.

Review: Ian Brown “Stellify”

Posted on 12 Aug 2009 at 5:04pm

“I’m anti-nostalgia,” says Ian Brown, who is now on his 6th solo album and still has no interest in getting his old band back together. Then again, with one of the most impressive back catalogues of any solo artist in recent years he has no need to jump on the overpopulated reunion bandwagon. There is no flagging solo career to boost and no knocks on the door from the taxman. Going it alone has gone quite well for him, if not at times a little patchy, but certainly far superior to what Ashcroft has put out since the Verve.

His new single, Stellify, is driven by a ridiculously catchy piano loop and stomping beat. It doesn’t sound like we’re in typical Ian Brown territory to begin with, but once that familiar Manc vocal kicks in after the first few bars we know where we are. Its not any better or any worse than the majority of his previous singles, some of which were criminally ignored, namely the brilliant Sister Rose, which limped in at number 87 on the singles charts only confirming their irrelevance in modern pop culture.

Ian Brown: “I Used To Bribe The Police”

Posted on 04 Aug 2009 at 11:19am

Ian Brown has spoken of the antics of The Stone Roses in their early years, revealing they used to bribe police to stop them breaking up their huge parties.

Speaking to channelbee.com, Brown said: “When we started in 1986 very few people lived in the city centre, so we used to have massive warehouse parties in Fairfield St. When the police came along and tried to stop us, we used to give them a crate of ale to keep it going. They would sit outside in their vans supping on ale. When they ran out we would give them another crate, there was nothing they could do with 2000 of us inside. Fancy getting away with that now!”

Brown is set to release his sixth studio album, ‘My Way’, in September and recently told nme.com it had been inspired by Michael Jackson’s classic album ‘Thriller’. “‘Thriller’ was our blueprint,” he said. “Every time we wrote a song we didn’t think was strong enough, we scrapped it. We mastered it on the day that Michael Jackson died too, so I’m taking that as a good omen.”

The album was recorded in Brown’s home city, Manchester, at Battery Studios. It was produced by his regular producer Dave McCraken.

Ian Brown: New Album Details Announced

Posted on 21 Jul 2009 at 10:26am

Ian Brown has publicised details for his forthcoming sixth solo album, titled ‘My Way’, which is set to be released on September 28th, following the lead single ‘Stellify‘ hitting the shops on September 21st.

The ex-Stone Roses frontman has said that the album drew inspiration from Michael Jackson’s career defining 1984 album, Thriller, even going as far as calling it “our blueprint”.

He went on to say that The King of Pop had died as they wrapped up mixing the album, seeing it as a “good omen” as the album mastering concluded. Brown spoke of how Jackson had inspired a certain mentality when making the album to such an extent that if a song wasn’t good enough, it was scrapped from the recording sessions at Manchester’s Battery Studios.

The album reunites Brown with longtime producer Dave McCracken who is known for being behind the mixing desk for Brown’s earler albums ‘Golden Greats’, ‘Music of the Spheres’ and ‘Solarised’.

It’s Brown’s sixth LP since parting ways with John Squire, Mani and Reni after The Stone Roses’ badly recieved sophomore album ‘Second Coming’, but since then the Manchester icon has covered a lot of ground including collaborating with Noel Gallagher and Sinead O’Connor.

More recently The ‘Roses seminal debut album singles are being reissued celebrating the legendary self-titled records twentieth anniversary.
