A year packed with some genuinely outstanding releases, 2011 has enjoyed some of the most unanimously acclaimed records of recent years; PJ Harvey has won seemingly every award up for grabs thanks to ‘Let England Shake’, Kate Bush has wowed everyone with her first record of the decade, while the likes of The Boxer Rebellion, FIGO and The Minutes have come to the party with equally impressive, under-the-radar efforts just as deserving of your precious time and attention.

Harcore rockers Cancer Bats have revealed an unlikley source of inspiration for their new album – folk band Fleet Foxes.
The Canadian band will release their fourth studio album, ‘Dead Set On Living‘, next year, and frontman Liam Cormier has said despite their heavy rock leanings, the Cancer Bats are not afraid to look elsewhere for influence when they write new material.
The nominees for the first ever Aim Independent Music Awards, established in July by The Association of Independent Music to highlight the best of British-signed indie music, have been announced today, with Adele, Fleet Foxes and Bon Iver amongst those up for awards.
Organisers of Belgium’s Pukkelpop festival have confirmed the remainder of the event has been cancelled following the tragic stage collapse yesterday (August 18th), which took the lives of five music fans and injured over 70 more.
The BBC reports a huge storm swept through the site yesterday, causing the third stage collapse at a music event in recent days.
Øya is delighted to announce 2011’s festival has completely sold out.
Final confirmations include a very special performance from Guided by Voices – the band’s first performance in Europe since 2002, and their only planned reunion date in Europe in 2011; alt-rock legend, Lou Barlow’s Sebadoh (who replace Fang Island); plus White Denim who are playing music from their critically acclaimed forth album ‘D‘.
Folk music is time travel. Maybe you didn’t know it, but six men from Seattle know it, and they’re on the road as you read this, raising hairs on the back of necks, spreading the secret of the world in three-part harmony. Skyler Skjelset, Christian Wargo, Josh Tillman, Casey Wescott, Morgan Henderson and Robin Pecknold are Fleet Foxes, the band who made ‘Helplessness Blues‘.
About that time travel. Folk music, as they play it, sums up the best of the last century’s music and gives us a teasing taste of the century to come. In the space of a single song, we might take in experimental jazz, the lightning fingerpicking of the old bluesmen or a runaway rock chorus gallop.
Summer’s here and up and down the UK and beyond bands are hauling themselves through rain, mud, occasional sunshine and irritating TV presenters as another festival season gets in full swing. So with 2011 already careering towards July, it seems like a good time to sit back, take stock of the first six months of the year, and sort through the best of what has been hogging the speakers at Live4ever so far. Is rock n roll music currently in a state of stagnation? Hmm, let’s just say, judge for yourself…
