Arctic Monkeys Discuss ‘Humbug’

Posted on 17 Aug 2009 at 2:35pm

Alex Turner and Matt Helders have given their thoughts on the Arctic Monkeys’ soon-to-be-released third album ‘Humbug’.  Speaking to BBC’s Newsbeat drummer Helders gave his thoughts on early reviews of the album which claimed the record displayed a more mature sound from the band: “I don’t think mature is the right word, honestly,” he said. “Who knows? Next time they’ll be calling it immature because of the bar of maturity we’ve set.”

However, lead singer Turner did say that the album is a step forward from 2007′s Favourite Worst Nightmare: “There is more to this record,” he explained. “Steve Lamacq just described it as tantalising which I quite liked.”

The band released a vinyl edition of new single ‘Crying Lightning today (17th), exclusively through Oxfam charity shops, one of which will contain two so-called ‘golden tickets’ to their upcoming headline appearence at the Reading/Leeds Festival. Discussing the reasons for selling through Oxfam, Matt Helders said: “There are more Oxfam shops than record stops I imagine these days, that’s the thing.” While Alex Turner admitted the ‘golden ticket’ idea was not theirs: “I’d love to say it was ours but it was the folks at Domino that thought of the Oxfam idea initially, but like you say, it’s a great idea.”

“Oxfam were responsible for the tickets. Barnardos next I reckon,” said Helders. “Children then aged.”

The pair also revealed details of a UK tour will be announced shortly.

Alex Turner warned us that the Arctic Monkey’s new material was going to be different, and he wasn’t lying. Anybody still in longing for I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor part 2 are going to be pretty dissappointed, this new track couldn’t be anymore different.
