Live4ever Presents: White Room

Stephen Smith

Who?

Jake – Lead vocals

Tristan – Guitar / Organ / Synth

Jacob – Guitar / Bv’s

Josie – Bass / Bv’s

Hen – Drums

Where?

Brighton.

How?

I guess through a love of similar music and us being best mates since we can remember. Me (Jake), Tristan and Jacob have been playing together since we were kids, and Hen started to get involved when we were about 13. We started to get more serious as we grew up and began to find our feet writing and playing as many shows as we could around Brighton. White Room formed in 2014, and when Josie joined earlier this year everything just clicked in place.

Why?

Of course there are the classics like The Beatles, The Doors, The Verve who have had a strong influence on our sound, and Paul Weller has always been a big one for me. Recently though we’ve been drawing inspiration from bands like King Gizzard, Parquet Courts and Pond.

Past?

We all have various day jobs at the moment. I’m currently a runner at LOFT Rehearsal Studios, Hen works as a pawnbroker and Josie fixes up sandwiches at Brighton Electric Studios. T is a waiter and Jacob has just started studying music business at BIMM.

Present?

Sky-Gaze, psych rock with grooves drawn from 90s baggy/dance tracks. Bright and shiny and dark and intense.

Future?

Intergalactic domination.

Did you know?

It all seems to happen when we’re in a van. You’ll have to join us some time…

What’s next?

We’ve just released our new single Stole The I.V. and are on our first headline UK tour at the moment. Next up we’re going to be writing loads of new material, demoing and currently making plans for much more touring in the new year.

Live4ever:

Drums land like bombs over jabbing guitar lines in the opening few seconds of White Room’s new single Stole the I.V.. Brighton’s indie five-piece, openly loved by Paul Weller, have been keeping the thread from here back to Britpop and the Madchester scene as taut as the lines groups were snuffing back then. Thankfully, this band seems a little more compos mentis than those times, even if they’ve had whatever’s in their drip nicked. This mid-tempo track, filled with big, melodic churns, clambers to a euphoric chorus where frontman Jake Smallwood wrings out, “I won’t shed a single tear for yooou”. It’s as worthwhile a throwback tune as baggy limbed aficionados could ask for.
