Damon Albarn has written the music for a new musical that will open in July as part of the Manchester International Festival.

wonder.land is bringing Lewis Carroll’s classic novel Alice In Wonderland into the 21st century and will focus on a Aly, a 12-year-old who retreats into a virtual world. “Bullied at school and unhappy at home, wonder.land lets her escape from her parents, from teachers, from herself,” the creators explain. It is being directed by Rufus Norris and has lyrics from Moira Buffini.

“I’m fascinated by the idea of going down a rabbit hole, the otherwordliness and what that might mean,” Albarn has said. “Alice aside, The Queen of Hearts, The Duchess, White Rabbit, Caterpillar were the most threatening characters of my childhood. I was genuinely very frightened of them as a kid.”

The show premieres at Manchester’s Palace Theatre. Tickets go on sale tomorrow (January 22nd).
