The Killers have continued their run of Christmas themed singles into a ninth year with the release of ‘Joel, The Lump Of Coal‘, which can be heard below.

“We watched Back To The Future in Soho in London one night,” frontman Brandon Flowers has explained to NME. “And of course the soundtrack is doused in Huey Lewis. It made me think how much we loved his voice growing up.”

The track was recorded with US chat show host Jimmy Kimmel, and will raise money for the AIDS charity (RED).

“Somehow, along the way, Huey lost his involvement,” Flowers continued. “Jimmy had this idea of a lump of coal who goes to a bad kid and gives up his life and becomes a diamond. It’s kind of genius that it hasn’t been used.”

The Killers have been fairly quiet this year after their hugely successful 2012 comeback with ‘Battle Born‘. Flowers is expected to use the downtime to revisit his solo career and should release a new album in 2015.
