Manic Street Preachers could never repeat ‘bravery’ of ‘The Holy Bible’

Nicky Wire has said it would be ‘impossible’ for the Manic Street Preachers to repeat the formula of their 1994 album ‘The Holy Bible‘ as they get ready to head out on a UK tour in celebration of its 20th anniversary next week.

Politically charged, confrontational, and even controversial, ‘The Holy Bible’ stood apart from just about everything else that was being made by British bands at the time. Far removed it certainly was from the flag-waving, faux optimism of the booming Britpop scene it was released in to.

“I haven’t played the ‘…Bible’ through for a long time,” bassist Nicky Wire reflects. “And then sitting down I guess the power of it, did actually really resonate with me and actually did make me think, with a slight tinge of sadness, just as a band, it’d be impossible really to be that brave with that much conviction, ever again.”

“There’s a state of mind with ‘The Holy Bible’ that you have to be really physical. You have to go out there with deep conviction, because you just can’t coast it.”

The Manics start their tour on December 8th at the Glasgow Barrowlands and then play two nights at the Manchester Albert Hall before visiting Dublin and undertaking a three-night residency at the Roundhouse in London.
