Despite only releasing two new songs this year via the medium of his career retrospective ‘Nothing Has Changed‘, David Bowie will compete for the Artist Of The Year prize at the inaugural BBC Music Awards later this week.

With musicians of course desperately crying out for another self-congratulatory evening of free champagne and back slapping, the first BBC Music Awards ceremony will take place on December 11th at Earls Court in London, hosted by the corporation’s irritants-in-chief Chris Evans and Fearne Cotton.

Bob Shennan, director of BBC Music, remarks: “The BBC Music Awards exist to celebrate the past 12 months in music. The shortlists feature an amazing range of hugely talented artists. Each and every one has made a unique mark on the music industry. They have experienced phenomenal success and it’s wonderful to see new acts featuring alongside some of the biggest names in the business.”

There’s probably more chance of Nigel Farage being in attendance on the night, but Bowie nevertheless will be up against Ed Sheeran, Elbow, Jungle, Royal Blood and Sam Smith for one of the evening’s main awards, while Dolly Parton gets a nod in the International Artist Of The Year section along with Lorde, Gregory Porter, Prince, Taylor Swift and Pharrell after royally entertaining the masses of BBC holidaymakers at last June’s Glastonbury festival.
