The full extent of the injuries suffered by U2 frontman Bono after a ‘cycling spill’, as described by the band, in New York has been reported by Rolling Stone – and it appears to have been much more serious than they first let on.

In a statement revealing they would not be able to fulfill a week-long residency on The Tonight Show as a result of the accident, U2 simply said Bono had ‘injured his arm’, but a more thorough report now outlines a serious facial injury and complicated surgery on a fractured elbow.

“Bono was taken emergently to the operating room. where the elbow was washed out and debrided, a nerve trapped in the break was moved and the bone was repaired with three metal plates and 18 screws,” orthopedic trauma surgeon Dean Lorich is quoted as saying in Rolling Stone.

As well as suffering ‘a facial fracture involving the orbit of his eye’, Bono also underwent ‘multiple X-rays and CAT scans’ and will now require ‘intensive and progressive therapy’.

This after Bono had been involved in a close shave whilst flying over Germany in a private jet just days earlier when a rear door broke off the plane on November 12th en route to the Bambi International Music awards.
