Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason: ‘U2’s album giveaway devalued music’

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason believes the 21st century trend for giving music away free, led of course this year by U2‘s iTunes ‘Songs Of Innocence‘ giveaway, is ‘devaluing music’.

“Music has been horribly devalued by being given away. It’s funny they didn’t sense some of that,” he told Rolling Stone. “It’s been the big story of the 21st century, music being devalued.”

Later in the interview, Mason also joked about the constant uncertainty which surrounds the future of his band. Though he did concede the chance of Roger Waters ever working with himself and Dave Gilmour again is ‘unlikely’, he added: “I think I’ll let David do the, ‘This is the last, this is the end’. I now believe when I’m dead and buried my tombstone will read, ‘I’m not entirely sure the band’s over’.”

What we can be sure of is Pink Floyd’s new album ‘The Endless River‘, comprising largely instrumental music recorded back in 1994, gets its UK release this time next week (November 10th).
