UK vinyl sales still on course to pass 1m mark for first time since 1996

Sales on the vinyl format remain on course to break the one million mark in the UK this year – a feat which hasn’t been achieved since the mid-nineties.

Figures released at the start of this month showed popular releases from the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Oasis and Jack White, as well as ongoing campaigns such as Record Store Day, had helped to already push sales past 2013’s total.

“This is an extraordinary turnaround,” ERA director general Kim Beyley said at the time. “Independent retailers were first to identify the untapped potential for vinyl and made it the focus of Record Store Day. With record labels now making more vinyl available, this trend shows no sign of abating.”

And sales have stayed strong this month, going past 800,000 and approaching one million for the first time since 1996 and the height of Britpop. Arctic Monkeys’ ‘AM’ remains the most popular vinyl record so far this year, ahead of Jack White’s boundary pushing ‘Lazaretto’ and the re-released version of Oasis’ classic debut ‘Definitely Maybe’.
