U2 heading for lowest chart position since 1981 with ‘Songs Of Innocence’

They might be wondering again about the whole free iTunes release thing after taking a look at the UK’s latest official midweek chart update; while the more conventional version of U2‘s new album ‘Songs Of Innocence‘ is on course for a place in the Top 5, it’s looking like it will be the band’s lowest chart entry since 1981.

Debuting at #4 on the main album chart would be taken as welcome news for most guitar-based acts these days, but for U2 it will represent their lowest first week position since ‘October‘. All subsequent studio releases have entered at number one with the exception of 1991’s ‘Achtung Baby‘, which was outstripped by Michael Jackson.

There’s still time for things to pick up though; the chart will be officially confirmed this coming Sunday (October 19th).
