Live4ever Presents: Spookyland

spookyland

Who?

Marcus (vocals, guitar), Liam (guitar), Nic (bass) and Nath (drums).

Where?

We all grew up in Sydney, Australia.

How?

I’d (Marcus) been playing solo and I made a record in 2010 that had band arrangements, so I got something together to play the songs that way. After a couple of line up changes in 2011 the current band was formed and we’ve been a stable group ever since.

Why?

For me it’s a pile of things that informed my style. Books, black metal, alt rock, shoegazer, country, rolk and rock & roll. Nic’s wired up in blues and classic rock – AC/DC and Motorhead – though he’s versed in basically everything, even the exotic: Celtic, Indian etc. Liam more or less shares my taste, as a player he’s deep in the shoegazer/post punk ministry. Nath’s a database of the greatest music of the last decade which is a good balance for all our vintage tendencies. Most relevant I guess is Nick Cave, AC/ DC The Church, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Lou Reed and Anton Newcombe.

Past?

Long catalogue I guess for the boys. I’ve never been employed, I was for a fortnight and got fired for having an atrocious short term memory and social skills. I studied philosophy and literature for a year and dropped out.

Present?

Our bass player Nic describes it best; four sweaty boys playing shambly rock and roll with nasally singing and bratty poetry atop.

Future?

We’re more experiential than anything…careless to fame, money, supreme reputation. We’re just following the leads of our existence, none of those things mean anything to us. We want to be a great live band and make the records we know we’re capable of, that’s all.

Did you know?

It’s always funny for us when we’re together; jokes of flatulence, alien invasions and mocking the government. I can’t recall any definitive event.

What’s next?

We’re about to play L.A, New York and have shows in London at the Hoxton Bar & Kitchen tonight (Oct 27th), White Heat @ Madame Jo Jo’s (28th) and Sebright Arms (29th). We’ve begun work on the debut album and it’s sounding great. Hopefully we’ll kick off 2015 with a song from it.

Live4ever:

Starting off with a Dylan-esque harmonica and romantic acoustic guitar, the first seconds of ‘Rock and Roll Weakling’ set the tone for lead singer Marcus Gordon’s tough, self-involved melancholy. His teen angsty voice sounds like a worn-out cassette played through the plastic wrapping of a cigarette box, and manages to carry emotion as empathetically as Placebo’s Brian Molko.

As the power ballad drums crank up like they’re trying to make a point, so does the song: whining is not just for pussies. The badass touch – maybe best shown through the emptiness in Gordon’s vague eyes and facial blood spat at the camera on the track’s official video – is refreshingly welcome in an abundance of artists who can’t keep their cool while wringing their hearts.
