Live4ever Presents: Medicine Men

mm

Who?

Ian Mackinnon (vocals/guitar)
Mick McGeoch (keys)
John Boyle (bass)
Mark O’Donnell (drums)

Where?

All based in Glasgow but Mick hails from Stranraer and Mark from Mallaig.

How?

We met each other through mutual friends really. A couple of us had played in a band before this and decided we wanted to change the way we did things, and that’s how Medicine Men came about.

Why?

Too many to mention probably. We listen to absolutely everything. I think it’s important not to restrict yourself to particular genres or styles. If it’s good, then it’s good. Simple as. But in terms of what influenced our sound, probably a mixture of Tame Impala, LCD Soundsystem, MGMT and Death In Vegas. Generally just anyone who adds a dance element to a standard rock band.

Past?

Nothing that interesting to be honest. Although one of us did have a brief stint as a male escort…

Present?

Synth strings, break beats, fuzz guitars.

Future?

Obviously we want to get our music out to as many people as possible. But if it all ends tomorrow then we can still say we’ve enjoyed it.

Did you know?

A few months ago we got some gear nicked from our rehearsal room. We then found the little prick selling the stuff on eBay. We tracked him down and showed up at his house – he was a 16 year old kid. Luckily his parents kicked off at him and not us!

What’s next?

King Tuts New Year’s Eve gig and another single coming next February.

Live4ever:

Show What You’re Made Of’ offers so much more than comparisons to many other tripped out, dance-punk, surf-pop artists could. More in the sense of the nature of the song, always fun and inventive in the way the glacier synthesizer orchestras turn angelic the more they levitate into ethereal realms of madness. More in the way the funky, grooving bass-line walks into every wall of noise with every intention of breaking through it, and in the way it still manages to come across as an absolute banger, full of cocksure strut and rocking gusto.

The crisp-clean guitars scratch the surface of a desert road with bulldozing force and melodic vocals soar above the surface of a multi-coloured dimension heated and crystallized by foreign suns. All for a danceable and instantly catchy critter slipping the grip of genre limitations. The fusion has been created, a great confidence in the overall sound arises; something full of surprises that catches eyes and ears off-guard as they wander in different directions. A magical number in which everything in-between is treated with equal importance.
