Mick Jagger, Dave Gilmour and Bryan Ferry are among 200 celebrities to have put their name to a letter which urges residents of Scotland to choose to remain in the United Kingdom when the country undergoes a referendum on the subject next month.

Led by Scotland’s majority party the SNP, Scottish voters will carry out the historic vote on September 18th. Most polls currently have a slight lead for the ‘No’ vote on independence, but celebrities from across the cultural spectrum also in favour of the union remaining as is are taking nothing for granted and have signed a letter which reads:

“The decision on whether to leave our shared country is, of course, absolutely yours alone. Nevertheless, that decision will have a huge effect on all of us in the rest of the United Kingdom.”

“We want to let you know how very much we value our bonds of citizenship with you, and to express our hope that you will vote to renew them. What unites us is much greater than what divides us.”

Other names from outside the musical world to have offered their support include Eddie Izzard, Steve Coogan, Steve Redgrave, David Attenborough and Stephen Hawking.
