BBC Radio 2 has opened a poll to find the greatest guitar riff of all time, with the final list being announced on August 25th.

100 songs, limited to one per artist, have been shortlisted as part of the station’s Guitar Season. Derek & The Dominoes‘ ‘Layla‘, ‘C’mon Everybody‘ by Eddie Cochran and The Rolling Stones‘ ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction‘ are just a few of the genuine classics on the list, while some of the more recent tracks put up for scrutiny include Arctic Monkeys‘ ‘Do I Wanna Know?‘, the White Stripes‘ ‘Seven Nation Army‘ and ‘No One Knows‘ by Queens Of The Stone Age.

Surprisingly, there’s no room for any Muse tracks on the list, despite the likes of ‘Hysteria‘ and ‘Plug In Baby‘ being some of the most recognised riff-led anthems of recent times – indeed, back in 2010 Total Guitar Magazine put the latter at number one on its own list of the best riffs ever.

“We’ve all been brought up with the most amazing guitar riffs throughout the history of pop music, but our trusty panel have drawn up a strong and eclectic mix we know our Radio 2 listeners are going to love,” Radio 2’s head of music Jeff Smith says.
