Doctors treating Wilko Johnson have declared themselves ‘happy with his condition’ but remain ‘cautiously optimistic’ after a nine-hour operation to remove a pancreatic tumour.

Johnson decided not too seek treatment after his original diagnosis at the end of 2012, but a re-evaluation of the nature of the tumour led to the cancellation of his live summer plans and an operation earlier this week.

“Wilko is recovering following a nine-hour operation on Wednesday in which doctors successfully removed a pancreatic tumour,” a statement reads. “The head of the medical team treating Wilko said that they were happy with his condition.”

“Wilko will stay under very close observation for the next few days. Although cautiously optimistic the team have to stress that it is very early days yet. The family thank everyone for their good wishes and ask for some privacy at this time so they can support Wilko with his recovery in peace.”

The former Dr. Feelgood guitarist embarked on what was billed as a ‘farewell tour’ of the UK during the first half of 2013 following his diagnosis, but in the end pursued live duties for most of the year.

2014 has seen him release an album with Roger Daltrey entitled ‘Going Back Home‘.
