Tongues have been set wagging on the possibility of a new David Bowie album being in the works, despite the legendary songwriter’s own tongue appearing to be firmly in his cheek during a congratulatory message to his label boss last night (April 24th).

Bowie sent the message to Columbia US chairman Rob Stringer, who was presented with the Strat Award at the Music Week Awards in London, but fans have been more taken with a reference to a ‘new album this year’, despite the mood of the message.

“When he asked me if I minded if he took a few Saturdays off from his duties as percussionist on my new album this year in order to catch the Luton Town football club fixtures, how could I refuse,” Bowie’s message read. “It’s the least I could offer to the man who with his own hands pulled my album to Number One throughout the world.”

It’s over a year now since David Bowie’s hugely successful, and abrupt, comeback brought the album ‘The Next Day‘. Speaking back in February, his long-term collaborator Tony Visconti revealed there are two or three ‘astounding’ songs left over from those sessions.
