Queen‘s 1981 Greatest Hits collection has made history by becoming the first album in the UK to sell more than six million copies.

The band’s guitarist Brian May has thanked ‘everyone who has supported us through the years’ in a special video (below), while Gennaro Castaldo of the British Phonographic Industry says:

“Queen are a part of our music heritage now, with a timeless appeal that will ensure demand for their songs will continue as new generations of fans keep coming through.”

Greatest Hits I‘ contains enduring Queen hits such as ‘Bohemian Rhapsody‘, ‘We Are The Champions‘, ‘Killer Queen‘ and ‘We Will Rock You‘, and was followed a decade later by ‘Greatest Hits II‘ – itself now one of Britain’s best selling releases.

The biggest selling studio album in the UK remains The Beatles‘ 1967 game-changer ‘Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band‘, while Adele‘s ‘21‘ recently edged out Oasis‘ 1995 LP ‘(What’s The Story) Morning Glory?‘ into third place.
