Bono admits U2 are ‘on the verge of irrelevance’

“We’re on the verge of irrelevance,” said Bono, clearly in bullish mood, during an interview with Zane Lowe yesterday (February 3rd).

After a sizable degree of commercial hype during the weekend’s Super Bowl coverage in the States, U2 released their comeback single ‘Invisible‘ as a free download for 24 hours. And although the advert went out to millions in the US, and has been viewed by just as many since on YouTube, Bono is well aware that the band are musically at an unclear stage in their career.

“You have to make stuff relevant to you and where you’re at, make an honest account of what you’re going through,” Bono continued. “If that’s relevant to other people, great. But we don’t know.”

Moving onto the recording of the band’s latest album, due this year and the first since 2009’s ‘No Line On The Horizon‘ sparked the mammoth 360 world tour, Bono remarked:

“We’re here in this great nation, in this capital, in some dank basement. Where I’m calling from, as we speak, there were mice spotted earlier. We call it the Oil Rig. Why is it that we always end up hanging out with men in overalls? You start a band when you’re 17 and then you get a crew if you’re lucky and they’re all in overalls and then you go to the studio and there’s more people in overalls. Not enough girls. Please, girls out there, start twiddling those knobs.”

U2 have returned to their former home of Island Records in preparation for the release of their new album.
