The BBC Sound Of… poll has surprised no-one by awarding its first place for 2014 to Sam Smith.

Already the recipient of the Brits Critics’ Choice Award, and a shortlisted act for MTV Brand New, Smith is gearing up to release his debut album ‘The Lonely Hour‘ in May after big chart success last year with Naughty Boy and Disclosure.

“I’m completely speechless,” he tells the BBC. “It’s a huge compliment to be recognised by the industry and the BBC in this way. Being amongst names like Ellie, Jessie J, Adele is just incredible because they inspire my music so much.”

Last year, sibling trio Haim took home the award and went on to claim a UK number one album with their maiden studio effort ‘Days Are Gone‘ – Alana from the band has offered some words of wisdom to the new winner.

“After we won, a lot of things start happening really fast and we were kind of freaked out,” she said. “I think if we’d had more of our album finished before we won, it would have come out a little bit faster. But, really, you have to take a breath and realise that these people you’ve never met enjoy what you do.”
