Liverpool mayor urges Boris Johnson to apologise for Beatles comments

beatles1Joe Anderson, mayor of Liverpool, has told Boris Johnson he will ‘have to apologise’ for the comments he is said to have made about The Beatles‘ rise to fame.

Speaking at the London School of Economics late last year, London mayor Boris Johnson is alleged to have said: “The greatest band in the world came from Liverpool, but in the end they recorded their stuff in London and it was London that helped propel them around the world.”

And his Liverpool counterpart has now urged Johnson to say sorry for the comments, which were made after much more serious controversies in recent years surrounding remarks about the Iraq hostage Ken Bigley and the 1989 Hillsborough disaster.

“Boris has already made a fool of himself with comments about Liverpool – both on Hillsborough and in accusing the city of ‘wallowing in pity’ for holding a memorial service for British hostage Ken Bigley, who was beheaded in Iraq,” Anderson states in the NME. “These were obviously more serious issues than popular music, but nevertheless it’s another embarrassing gaffe by him, which he’ll have to apologise for.”
