Elbow’s Guy Garvey: ‘Give Night & Day Cafe protected status’

Elbow frontman Guy Garvey believes Manchester’s Night & Day Cafe – whose future is in doubt after a Statutory Nuisance Abatement Notice was served by Manchester Council – should be given Blue Plaque status for its contribution to the local area’s culture.

One local resident urged the council to take action following noise complaints, and the venue’s owners could face a substantial fine or even a prison sentence if the notice isn’t dealt with.

Speaking to XFM‘s Jo Good however, Garvey has said far from being closed, Night & Day should be given protective status. “Yann didn’t get into what he’s doing in Night and Day to make money, he did it because he wanted to give Manchester’s young artists and musicians somewhere to hang out and a bit of self-respect,” he said of the owner.

“I used to give out Night and Day’s phone number as our phone number because we were in there more than we weren’t. It’s not just important for music, it’s important for all areas of culture. It needs blue plaque protected status, all of our small venues do.”

Night & Day’s owners officially responded to the complaint last week via a Facebook statement which insisted they are ‘doing everything they possibly can to resolve the issue’.
