Trent Reznor still ‘unravelling the riddle’ of David Bowie’s ‘The Next Day’

Look back on the year in music, Nine Inch Nails chief Trent Reznor has said he is still ‘unravelling the riddle’ of David Bowie‘s ‘The Next Day‘ album, and was bored of Arcade Fire‘s ‘Reflektor‘ before it was even released.

“I’m still unraveling the riddle that he presented,” Reznor states when writing for the Hollywood Reporter.

“I’m still getting new meanings out of the lyrics. What I thought was conservative production now feels forward-thinking. Like any great album, it’s revealed itself to be something that wasn’t what I initially thought.”

Moving onto Arcade Fire, Reznor compared the sudden release of ‘The Next Day’ to the drip-feed style of the Canadian band’s fourth LP – and appeared much more enamoured with Bowie’s style.

“The marketing, too, felt like a breath of fresh air,” he continued on ‘The Next Day’. “It wasn’t like the Arcade Fire album and its yearlong rollout, where it was like, ‘OK, I get it. You’ve got an album out, you’ve played every TV show in the world’.”
