The Pogues’ guitarist Philip Chevron dies, aged 56

chevronPhilip Chevron, long term guitarist with The Pogues, has died after a long battle with cancer. He was 56.

Chevron joined The Pogues in time for their 1985 second album ‘Rum, Sodomy and The Lash‘ after dropping to the fringes of the music industry following his time with early punks The Radiators, and became an influential part of the band, writing the firm fan favourite ‘Thousands Are Sailing‘ for 1987’s ‘If I Should Fall From Grace With God‘.

After being first diagnosed with throat cancer in 2007, Chevron was given the all clear last year, and performed live with The Pogues as they celebrated their 30th anniversary with triumphant gigs in London and Paris. However, back in May it was revealed the disease had returned, and was inoperable.

A short statement released today (October 8th) announced his passing, and reads: “After a long illness Philip passed away peacefully this morning. We all send our sincere condolences to his family.”
