Paul McCartney added to this month’s surprise performance in New York’s Times Square with a hastily announced live appearance at Covent Garden in London today (October 18th).

Sir Paul alerted fans to the gig via a message on Twitter which read, ‘I’m getting ready to pop up in Covent Garden at 1pm today’, and subsequently treated the capital to a five-song set entirely made up of tracks from his ‘New‘ album.

“Good afternoon, welcome to Covent Garden,” McCartney said to his audience. “We’re just going to do some songs from our new album so get your phones out – as if they weren’t already.”

McCartney has stayed in London this afternoon for a special signing session at the city’s flagship HMV shop, and will be hoping his efforts help to push ‘New’ further up the charts when the official rundown is confirmed on Sunday. The midweeks had his record down at #4, trailing John Newman, Pearl Jam and Cher.
