Damon Albarn is back in Mali working on the latest branch of his African Express project, reports The Observer.

According to the paper, Albarn has been joined in the country’s capital Bamako by a variety of African artists, as well as Brian Eno, Holy Other, Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Jeff Wootton (Gorillaz, Ex Beady Eye) and others for recording sessions which he hopes will result in the first African Express album after previous live outings with a rolling cast of musicans.

“I keep coming back to Mali, through everything that’s happened,” Albarn has told The Observer. “At times it has felt odd in Bamako, with the problems in the north, but I’m just trying to personally establish dialogue with the people in this country and the music.”

In the summer, the always busy Blur frontman also confirmed he has spent time in the studio with producer and XL Recordings boss Richard Russell with an eye on his first solo album proper.
