As the lukewarm applause which greeted their performance on David Letterman’s US chat show last week would testify, MGMT‘s sharp left-field turns since the release of their debut album ‘Oracular Spectacular‘ in 2007 have divided both critics and fans alike, and in a new interview with Rolling Stone, Andrew VanWyngarden has admitted he’s not even sure if the band themselves would want to listen their forthcoming third album.

“I don’t even know if it’s music we would want to listen to,” VanWyngarden said. “It’s just what’s coming out of us. We didn’t make a single compromise.”

“Weird things would happen to me up there,” VanWyngarden later remarked when thinking back to the duo’s recording sessions in Buffalo, New York at producer Dave Fridmann’s Tarbox Road Studios. “I had total mental breakdowns sometimes.”

‘MGMT’ is set for release on September 16th.

‘MGMT’ tracklist:

‘Alien Days’
‘Cool Song No. 2’
‘Mystery Disease’
‘Introspection’
‘Your Life Is a Lie’
‘A Good Sadness’
‘Astro-Mancy’
‘I Love You Too, Death’
‘Plenty Of Girls In the Sea’
‘An Orphan Of Fortune’
