Placebo’s Brian Molko backs up Thom Yorke’s stance on Spotify

Placebo frontman Brian Molko has said he believes the people behind the online streaming programme Spotify are in the business ‘purely to make profit from others’ after Thom Yorke‘s side-project Atoms For Peace decided to withdraw their music from the service earlier this week.

Yorke, along with bandmate and producer Nigel Godrich, made the decision to pull their group from Spotify as they believe it is bad for new musicians, but came in for criticism from some quarters as Radiohead have in the past offered their own music (potentially) for free when promoting the album ‘In Rainbows‘ in 2007.
However, Molko has also questioned Spotify’s motives and impact on the music industry during an interview with Music Week, in which he says:

“The jury’s still out on Spotify. I don’t see any problem with putting your singles up there because they are on the radio and people can ‘audio hijack’ them – but I don’t see the point in negotiating really good digital rights for your record company for them to just put all your music on streaming services.”

“I don’t think it’s got anything to do with fighting piracy or providing a service that’s good for the music industry and for new bands,” he continues. “They are just interested in making money at the expense of others. It comes from a place of just pure profit-making on their part.”
