The BBC has hailed its extensive digital coverage of this year’s Glastonbury festival as a huge success after music fans flocked to its service in their their millions during the course of last weekend.

The majority of the three-day action from six stages – including the main Pyramid and Other stages – was streamed live online, while highlights of various sets were also made available.

“Glastonbury 2013 on the BBC has been outstanding,” the BBC’s Controller of Popular Music Bob Shennan said.

“Record-breaking numbers of people tuned in to what has been our most comprehensive digital Glastonbury offering to date. This year, we gave our audience the opportunity to watch what they wanted, when they wanted and how they wanted. And they did.”

Figures suggest there were 1.5m unique visits to the BBC’s online coverage, while 6.2m viewers took advantage of the Red Button service – an increase to the tune of 77% compared to Glastonbury’s 2011 edition.

Unsurprisingly, The Rolling Stones‘ Saturday night headline performance proved to be the most in-demand of the weekend’s action, with 700,000 people taking it in via radio and TV.
