Shane Meadows: No ‘digging dirt’ on Stone Roses in new film

Made Of Stone director Shane Meadows has said he intentionally avoided any reflection on the inter-band strife which dogged the Stone Roses before their eventual split in 1996 on his new documentary.

In an interview with the BBC ahead of the film’s premiere, Meadows explained that he wanted his documentary to focus solely on celebrating the group’s hugely successful European comeback tour, and wasn’t interested in using it as an opportunity to ‘dig for dirt’.

“The only thing they didn’t want to do was the classic thing you see in documentaries where someone is sat in front of the mixing desk or a rack of guitars,” he said.

“A lot of films dig for dirt and they’re looking for that. It’s about celebrating this reunion and I was right into that. If people want to dig dirt there are millions of other documentaries like that out there. This was a celebration; it’s as much about the fans as it is about the band coming back.”
