The Stone Roses replaced as Coachella headliners by Blur

The Stone Roses who headlined on Coachella’s main stage last weekend (April 12) have been swapped out with Blur who opened for the Mancunian band at the festival in California.  The Stone Roses will no longer be topping the bill this coming Friday.

It seems Blur drawing a bigger crowd last Friday might be the main reason for the surprise decision.

The Stone Roses headlined the opening night of the festival in front of a small but dedicated crowd reports the NME. Fan singalongs included ‘I Wanna Be Adored‘, ‘Made Of Stone‘ and ‘Waterfall’, as well as renditions of ‘This Is The One‘ and I Am The Resurrection‘.

Britpop band Blur similarly rocked through their greatest hits including the classic tracks ‘Beetlebum‘ ,’Out Of Time‘, ‘Tender‘ and ‘For Tomorrow’, among others.

Special guest – English actor Phil Daniels, who features on the recorded version of the single ‘Parklife’, had joined the band on stage.

UPDATE:

The Guardian wrote following regarding the band swap:

Still, despite appearances, it’s not clear that the Roses have really been demoted. While Coachella’s principal lineup announcement gave the Roses top billing, another graphic, issued at the same time, gave the honour to Blur. Even if they didn’t predict the Coachella crowds’ ambivalent response to I Wanna Be Adored, organisers may have planned the lineup switch all along.
