Jake Bugg has said he hopes his rapid rise to mainstream attention during the past twelve months will inspire a new generation pick up the guitar and tread a similar path.

“I want to inspire young people to pick up instruments and write tunes again; that’d make me happy,” he is quoted as saying in today’s Daily Star. “The key is to practise and write your songs – be inspired and have that willpower.”

During the chat, Bugg also reflected on his time in America which began supporting Noel Gallagher and Snow Patrol in late 2013, and said he doesn’t believe the success of British acts such as Ed Sheeran and One Direction Stateside has helped open doors for artists such as himself.

“I’d like to have done quite a bit in the States and have another record, or be on the way to finishing one, by the end of 2013,” he continues. “America has been brilliant. I did some shows recently and they were all sold out. It’s great going to another country and having a different audience hear your music.”

“Ed Sheeran hasn’t helped open the doors for singer-songwriters and One Direction? No comment.”
