Vampire Weekend will release their ‘dark’ new album this spring, according to frontman Ezra Koenig.

Speaking to Q, Koenig said the record ‘really does feel like the third chapter in a book’, and added: “We created some characters on the first record, some of which are real people, some of which are ourselves, so it’s not so hard to keep following them and see what their concerns are now and how their lives have changed.”

Meanwhile, bandmate Rostam Batmanglij has been speaking to Spin regarding the forthcoming record, and has said its sound is the result of ‘thinking forward and being fearless’.

“You want the personality of each performer – whether it’s singing or bass or drums or piano – to be intact,” he has remarked. “The way this album sounds is the product of thinking forward and being fearless in terms of mixing and production, going for something that hasn’t been done before but using elements and techniques that have existed for years and years, pushing them as far as they can go.”

The third studio effort will follow 2010’s ‘Contra‘ – a number one album in both the UK and US.
