London’s Olympic Stadium to become live music venue?

The London Olympic Stadium could re-open as a live music venue as early as this July, reports BBC London.

The BBC claims concert promoters had their attentions piqued by the live music staged during the 2012 Olympics’ closing ceremony, and now hope the venue will become a viable alternative to the city’s O2 Arena and Hyde Park locations, the latter of which has been the subject of much council wrangling during the past twelve months due to allegations made by local residents of excessive noise and disruption.

“The exciting thing for us is that we have the opportunity to put on some major events in the park – some music events and festivals and an anniversary weekend on 27 and 28 July,” Dennis Hone, chief executive of the London Legacy Development Corporation has said. “We hope to announce the content in the coming weeks.”

The long-term future of the Olympic Stadium is still to be decided after a legal challenge from Leyton Orient FC chairman Barry Hearn delayed the handover of the venue to West Ham United, despite the East London football club remaining the preferred bidder.

The stadium will also welcome athletics once again in 2017 when the sport’s World Championships are held in London.
