BBC 6Music is UK’s most popular digital radio station

BBC 6Music increased its listenership by 31% last year to become the UK’s most popular digital-only radio station, that’s according to new figures released by Rajar.

The station was threatened with closure by the BBC at the start of 2010, when the Director General at the time Mark Thompson cited cost cutting measures as a reason for the proposed move, but has since seen its stock rise significantly after  a series of protests and campaigns – launched by fans, musicians and DJs alike – helped to secure its long term future.

And the steady growth culminated during 2012 when 6Music enjoyed 1.9 million listeners a week. “Digital radio continues to transform the way people listen to the radio and one third of all listening to digital platforms represents an important milestone,” Ford Ennals, CEO of Digital Radio UK has said as the platform as a whole saw a rise of 14% in listener numbers last year.

The figures add to what was already a successful year for 6Music after it picked up the UK Station of the Year prize at the 2012 Sony Radio Academy Awards last May.
